I think the one thing that will clear it all up is.....Spray Silicone. Get a small can preferably with a tube that goes on the end if the spray nozzle. Spray a little into the volume switch's, with the machine off at first, work those switches, a lot! Then turn on the machine, and work them a little...

I have a nice VOM for sale. Comes with nicer 3' test leads, manual and battery. The digital meter works great, has back lighting for dark location readings.
