Changes for mobile device users

Post by Chris »

If you are using a mobile device you will notice that viewing the forums has changed. I added a few modifications to remove all the "extras" when viewing the forums. This new look will allow viewing the forums from mobile devices easier.
While we test this out certain things such as "Thanks" will not be available when viewing from a mobile device. Once things appear to work ok then I can add those features to the new view. I also have a plan to make viewing machines in the database easier for mobile devices.

Let me know what you think about this new look for mobile devices.
These are my opinions and just because I am the admin you don't have to agree with me

You mean there are mobile devices to access the Forums :?: :!:
I only knew about the wireless laptop :!:
Now you can partake while even on a date.

Bad
To play or not to play, that is the question.

While I appreciate the effort, I don't much like the "feel" of the watered down db.
Maybe you can give the option (as some sites have) to view either mobile or regular version?

Alright...
After being forced to use the mobile version throughout the course of one shift at work, I'll have to change my opinion of the mobile version.
I downright loath it.
~I couldn't post anywhere.
~I couldn't pm the Boss-man to bring it to his attention.
~And the chatbox is omitted.
It just doesn't mesh.
It's kinda like having to reinstall your comp's OS....
You go from "what you know & love" to a hollow shell of an empty system.
I understand the post/pm may just be a correctable obstacle, but I honestly believe there should be an option for members to choose their format.
My iphone 3GS never had one problem with the original format.

I too have an iPhone and I found that the way that forum was displayed I spent more time zooming in on every page than reading.

The post and reply buttons are at the bottom of the page....and I did notice that there was no way to see/send PMs. I was going to fix that tonight. I personally like the new condensed format when viewing it from my iPhone...although it does need quite a lot of tweaks to make it more usable.

Until I can write the code to enable/disable the mobile version I have disabled the feature. I guess we can chalk this up to an experiment gone bad :)

:)
My issue wasn't location of the post/reply buttons...
It was the error page I was directed to after clicking them. :(
(and the pm button)

I appreciate your efforts to give all members an accessible experience on the go.
These glitches arise when updating, it's the nature of the beast.

Once I have some more time I am going to work on it and give it another go...this time adding the feature to be able to view in non-mobile mode :)

I didn't get a chance to try it either. I don't have a smart phone, but the web browser is ok on my phone. The ability to read, reply and create new posts would be cool even though most of what I do these days is read posts.

I didn't get a chance to try it out, but on other sites when given the option of a mobile or regular version I always stick to the regular one. I also don't like "watered down" versions and don't mind zooming in and out.

the zooming in is a time suck even if it isnt the big of a deal
would it be possible to just start zoomed in?
or maybe the choice to do that?
