PLAYBOY LIMITED EDITION

Post by chickje »

THEME
If a classic Vegas slot machine mated with a jukebox, their offspring would probably look like the Playboy Limited Edition pachislo. The jukebox theme also comes into play when the jackpot hits. The pachislo goes mental and starts blurting out Madonna and Britney Spears songs. So far I've heard the following hits:

- Madonna - Open your Heart
- Madonna - Like a Virgin
- Britney Spears - Toxic
- Britney Spears - Crazy
- Britney Spears - Stronger

I'm not sure they used the original recordings. It's definitely not Madonna singing, but it is a good cover version. The Britney songs are all Super Eurobeat remixes and very uptempo. I'm not the biggest Britney fan, but the mixes on this machine are very cool.

GRAPHICS
The machine looks very classy. The items on the reels are all classic slot tokens (cherries, grapes, sevens, bells, etc.) with a subtle Playboy logo and bunny head added to them. I like the fact that it's a limited edition, but I also have a soft spot for the normal black version with the Playmate. Can't decide which one is better looking. This one is probably a bit more timeless.

SOUND
It's a relatively quiet machine when it's not singing. Just the sound of the reels spinning and the blips and blops when you press a button. There are a few voice samples. A Japanese girl occasionaly shouts out something I don't understand and if you're really lucky, an American female (Playmate?) will give you some encouragement to keep playing. The sound is loud on it's lowest volume setting, but if you put the machine in a large living room, it's not too loud. The songs are a bit louder, but this only adds to the atmosphere.

GAMEPLAY
It's a straightforward slot machine. You will mostly be playing to hit three bells or three replays and the occassional cherry. When the machine is filled with enough coins, it will occasionally go into Bunny Mode (that's what I call it anyway). This is to entice you to keep pumping coins into the pachislo, because the jackpot will hit soon. In Bunny Mode, the top lights dim and the bunny head starts to pulsate in rainbow like mood colors. It's pretty cool and gets you all excited for the bonus (which could take another fifty coins, but at least you know it will happen soon.) In Jackpot Mode, every spin ends in three bells. If you're lucky, a few cherries will also pop up. After a payout of around 224 coins, you get 20 more spins before Jackpot Mode (and the song) ends. This is Replay Mode and you will hit more replays than usual. When the song ends, the machine goes back to normal mode and you have to feed it enough coins to fill the jackpot.
The lack of an LCD screen is a shame, as there are no bonus games to add a bit of variety to the gameplay.

EXTRA'S & VENDOR
I bought the machine from Dragonfly Amusement and it came with a free sturdy coin tray and 250 coins. I bought 572 extra coins (a weird number I know, but that made the price a nice round number). The coins are all old and from more than a dozen different parlors and casino's. It's very cool to see all these different designs. Dragonfly is not the cheapest vendor around, but he only stocks premium machines and the quality of the pachislo's is excellent. My Playboy was clean, with barely a scratch on it and dust free on the inside. I would definitely recommend this vendor to everyone in Europe looking for a Pachislo or Pachinko. As I've stated before, his communicated is more than excellent. You really feel like a valued customer.

OVERALL
Playboy Limited Edition is a great Pachislo if you're looking for a simple yet classic machine. If you want a Las Vegas slot machine with a few cool extra's, this is definitely one to consider. If you're after a cool Pachislo with bells and whistles, that will keep you entertained for hours as you discover new animations and game modes... look elsewhere.
